My rather gloomy day has just been brightened by the news of a new cover for a truly magnificent book–Elizabeth Fama premiered the breathtaking new face of her second book, Monstrous Beauty, on her agent Sara Crowe’s blog!
Fierce, seductive mermaid Syrenka falls in love with Ezra, a young naturalist. When she abandons her life underwater for a chance at happiness on land, she is unaware that this decision comes with horrific and deadly consequences.
Almost one hundred forty years later, seventeen-year-old Hester meets a mysterious stranger named Ezra and feels overwhelmingly, inexplicably drawn to him. For generations, love has resulted in death for the women in her family. Is it an undiagnosed genetic defect . . . or a curse? With Ezra’s help, Hester investigates her family’s strange, sad history. The answers she seeks are waiting in the graveyard, the crypt, and at the bottom of the ocean—but powerful forces will do anything to keep her from uncovering her connection to Syrenka and to the tragedy of so long ago.
This is a novel that I’ve been championing since October last year, and I’ve also had the pleasure of becoming friends with Elizabeth, so this is just great news all around. The colours are luminous and I love that designer Anne Diebel used such a seductive image to hint at the depth (pun not intended) of Syrenka’s character. I’m especially a big fan of how the cover is mostly black–you can’t miss the smallest details of the single figure in the image. As I mentioned on Twitter, “gorgeous” does not do this cover justice, and the story is even more astonishing.
